Baden-Württemberg: police shoot at the playground: man injured

Weinheim (dpa / lsw) - A man was injured on Monday on a playground in Weinheim (Rhein-Neckar district) by using a police weapon. The 34-year-old came to a hospital, as the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) Baden-Württemberg and the Mannheim public prosecutor announced in the evening. There was no information on the severity of the injuries or the number of shots. The investigations continued.

According to the information, this was preceded by a dispute between two men. When the police wanted to check the two, the 34-year-old is said to have pulled out a knife and attacked the officers. They initially used pepper spray, but this had no effect. The emergency services then used their firearms.

The city announced in the evening via the short message service Twitter that there was no longer any danger. Mayor Manuel Just (CDU) thanked the police for the quick and, in his view, appropriate action. With a place as sensitive as a children's playground, professional access is crucial to protect people, he explained. Most importantly, parents and children were not attacked or injured.

The mayor also thanked the parents, who quickly alerted the police. They would have shown "civil courage with a sense of proportion and overview," said Just accordingly.
