Baden-Württemberg: Unemployment in the southwest has increased again

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The number of unemployed in Baden-Württemberg rose again in August. In August, around 241,500 people were registered as unemployed in the southwest, around 14,620 more than in the previous month, as reported by the regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency on Wednesday in Stuttgart. The unemployment rate rose by 0.2 points compared to the previous month to 3.8 percent. In August 2021, the unemployment rate was still 3.9 percent.

According to the employment agency, the increase is partly seasonal, as many jobs and training contracts expire in summer and young people leave school. Among adolescents and young adults, the unemployment rate rose by 0.7 percentage points to 3.4 percent compared to the previous month. 23,266 people under the age of 25 are currently still registered as unemployed, said Christian Rauch, head of the regional directorate.

"Experience has shown that the number will decrease in the next few months, but in recent years we have observed a certain reluctance to start training," said Rauch. This delays the urgently needed increase in skilled workers.
