Marktschellenberg (dpa / lby) - An 87-year-old mountaineer slipped and died during a hike on the Untersberg near Marktschellenberg in the Berchtesgadener Land district. The experienced mountaineer was alone on Thursday afternoon, as the police announced on Friday. He fell 40 meters deep into gravel terrain without any outside involvement.
Helpers immediately called the mountain rescue service. Due to fog, the rescue helicopter was unable to fly to the scene of the accident. Around 24 rescue workers from the three surrounding mountain rescue services walked to the scene of the accident. The emergency doctor could only determine the death of the man on site. The alpine climb was probably wet and slippery due to heavy fog.
