Bavaria: Bedford-Strohm opens an exhibition about Cranach's ancestors

Kronach (dpa/lby) - 500 years ago, Martin Luther's translation of the New Testament into German was published for the first time - published and illustrated by Lucas Cranach the Elder. That is why an exhibition on the so-called September Testament will open on Friday (July 29) in Cranach's birthplace, in the Upper Franconian town of Kronach.

The Bavarian Protestant regional bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, who has a very special connection to the famous Cranach family of artists, is also expected to attend: He is a descendant of Lucas Cranach, as the press office of the regional church confirmed.

The 3,000 copies of the September Testament were immediately sold out, according to the information on the exhibition. For the illustration, Cranach dealt with the apocalypse of Albrecht Dürer. Together with the goldsmith Christian Döring, Cranach probably also assumed the publishing risk for the September Testament. The show illuminates the meaning of the work from different perspectives.

Cranach was born in Kronach 500 years ago and is one of the most famous German artists of the Renaissance. The exhibition ends on October 30th.
