Bavaria: Car full of allegedly stolen copper cables stopped

Erlangen/Bamberg (dpa/lby) - The police stopped a motorist on Autobahn 73 near Erlangen with almost a ton of allegedly stolen copper cables. The 34-year-old man was noticed on Wednesday because the weight of the material caused his car to drag "almost on the ground", the police said on Thursday. Investigations had shown that the 980 kilograms of copper cable had probably been stolen from the port of Bamberg.

According to the destination of his navigation system, the perpetrator was on his way to a scrap dealer in Nuremberg, "probably to make money out of the copper," said a police spokesman on Thursday. The man is being investigated for theft.
