Bavaria: Carnival parades in Bavaria: hundreds of thousands expected

Corona - what was that again? Inflation, energy crisis - something is always: Bavaria's fools are heading for the climax of the fifth season. When it comes to traditional moves, indiscipline is a must.

Würzburg (dpa / lby) - Hundreds of thousands of people, often dressed up imaginatively, want to be part of the traditional carnival processions in Bavaria this Sunday. Things will be particularly lively in Franconia, for example in Würzburg, where, according to self-promotion, the largest carnival parade in southern Germany takes place "right of the Rhine". In the pre-Corona years, up to 100,000 people watched the hustle and bustle in the city on the Main. The motto this year is: "Würzburg saves electricity and gas, but not on the carnival fun". According to the organizers, around 150 groups with around 3,500 participants have registered.

Every year, the carnival parades herald the last days of lived indiscipline until everything is over on Ash Wednesday. In many communities, clubs and carnival societies parade through the streets, often armed with sweets, stuffed animals and flowers. The throwing material is often known under the term camels, although that actually means small chewy candies that sometimes stick stubbornly to the teeth when eaten.

You can also let off steam in Aschaffenburg, Nuremberg, Bayreuth or Coburg. For months, the Tanzmariechen trained diligently and Garden worked on their elaborate choreographies. Marching bands are intended to get visitors on the side of the road in the right mood.
