Bavaria: chief conductor Mallwitz: Nuremberg has become a home

Nuremberg (dpa / lby) - Before moving to Berlin, the general music director of the Nuremberg State Theater, Joana Mallwitz, looks at the farewell with melancholy. "Regardless of any possible successes on paper, I can say: Nuremberg is a home for my husband and I," said Mallwitz in an interview with the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" (Saturday edition). "I have the feeling that Nuremberg has an extremely well-functioning urban society. You are not only welcomed warmly, but also taken care of if necessary."

Even after her upcoming move to Berlin in the summer of 2023, the birthplace of her child will always remain a home. "Our son is a boy from Nuremberg," emphasized Mallwitz. Even music-loving Franconians will not soon forget the chief conductor, who is celebrated as the "exceptional talent of her generation" - after all, she has caused a lot of enthusiasm with her "expedition concerts", in which she personally brings the performed works closer to the visitors.

"It would be silly to claim that I don't feel this special energy in the room," Mallwitz described the audience's reaction. "Sometimes in such concerts there are also crystalline moments that are so quiet, as if they were about to break apart like glass. That is, I think, the pure joy of listening, which we hardly practice these days. Maybe it's this adventure, that triggers something in people."

Mallwitz joined the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg as General Music Director for the 2018/2019 season and will be Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin from the 2023/2024 season.
