Bavaria: Corona causes health expenditure to rise sharply

Fürth (dpa / lby) - In the Corona year 2020, public budgets spent significantly more on health. Compared to the previous year, their healthcare costs rose by 70.2 percent to around 4.8 billion euros, as the State Statistical Office announced on Thursday in Fürth. Responsible for this were the measures to contain the pandemic, such as compensation payments to hospitals and other facilities, corona tests and the vaccination campaign that started in December 2020.

According to the state office, overall health expenditure in Bavaria in 2020 increased at an above-average rate. Compared to the previous year, these increased by 5.8 percent to around 69 billion euros. In the five years before Corona, health costs had risen by an average of 4.8 percent. Around 5,200 euros were paid per capita for health in Bavaria in 2020, around 280 euros more than in the previous year.
