Bavaria: Part-time studies: Bavaria lags behind in a nationwide comparison

Gütersloh/Munich (dpa/lby) - The Free State of Bavaria lags behind in the nationwide comparison when it comes to offering part-time courses. With a share of 13.8 percent, Bavaria is only eleventh in a country comparison for courses that are also offered part-time, according to a study published on Thursday by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE), a subsidiary of the Gütersloh Bertelsmann Foundation. revealed. With 5.0 percent (winter semester 2020/21) Bavaria was in tenth place in terms of the proportion of part-time students.

Saarland leads the field with a share of 64.7 percent, followed by Hamburg (53.6) and Thuringia (52.3). When it comes to part-time students, Hamburg leads with a share of 21.1 percent ahead of North Rhine-Westphalia with 13.3 percent. However, in some federal states, including North Rhine-Westphalia and Hamburg, the location of distance learning universities is noticeable. Critics say this skews the statistics.

Nevertheless, the proportion of part-time study programs within Bavaria has fallen over the past two years. In 2020 it was still 14.1 percent. The nationwide average is 17.9 percent, after 16.1 percent in 2020. There are 36 universities in Bavaria where more than one percent of the students study part-time.

According to its own statements, the CHE used the data from the University Compass of the German Rectors' Conference for the 2021/22 winter semester to record the courses offered and the part-time offer rate. The proportion of actual part-time students, on the other hand, is based on information from the Federal Statistical Office for the 2020/21 winter semester.
