Bavaria: Schweinfurt cannot host the 2026 State Garden Show

Schweinfurt (dpa / lby) - In view of inflation, the energy crisis and falling tax revenues, Schweinfurt no longer wants to host the 2026 state garden show after all. Mayor Sebastian Remelé (CSU) said on Wednesday and announced that he would submit this proposal to the city council for a decision on October 25th. "The Ukraine and the resulting energy crisis are having massive repercussions in almost every area," he said. "For example, personnel expenses are increasing due to reforms such as citizen income or the energy lump sum, social spending and thus the district levy are increasing."

The hoped-for recovery in trade tax also failed to materialize - this particularly affected Schweinfurt, which has a particularly large number of industrial companies.

For years there had been repeated criticism from the city of organizing a state horticultural show. A citizens' initiative, for example, wanted to prevent the state garden show because they considered the financial risk for the city to be too high due to the corona pandemic and the significant drop in trade tax revenue.

In view of possible risks, the city had reserved a contractually defined right of termination, which is now to come into play.

In the next few years, the State Garden Shows will take place in Freyung (2023), Kirchheim near Munich (2024) and Furth im Wald (2025).
