Bavaria: teachers' association: violence in schools is common, but a taboo subject

Munich (dpa / lby) - Bavaria's largest teachers' association sees a frightening trend according to a recent survey of violence against teachers. "Violence in schools in Bavaria is unfortunately the order of the day and at the same time still a taboo subject," said Simone Fleischmann, President of the Bavarian Teachers' Association (BLLV), on Friday about the nationwide study. Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, the attacks have continued to increase. Fleischmann demanded that politicians should not leave the affected teachers alone.

The representative survey of around 1300 headmasters was presented on Friday at the start of the Headmasters' Congress in Düsseldorf. Accordingly, two-thirds of the school management reported direct psychological violence - such as insults, threats or harassment. In 2018, only 48 percent of the lines stated this. A third of those surveyed reported that teachers were victims of cyber bullying, i.e. defamation or coercion on the Internet - this is also a significant increase. And another third of schools experienced violent physical attacks on teachers or school administrators.

According to Fleischmann, school administrations in the Free State demanded more staff, both in the educational and non-educational areas, and more hours for special tasks. Where there is a lack of professional teachers, inclusion and integration do not succeed either. "That not only leads to frustration and overwhelm for the students, parents and teachers." The result is "an environment in which we are less and less able to oppose violence," said the association's president.
