Bayern: Potye after EM silver: Two years no technical training

Munich (dpa / lby) - After his surprising European Championship silver, high jumper Tobias Potye surprised even more with a statement about his training. "I don't think most people know that. I haven't done a technique session in the last two years. Of course it's difficult to hit every jump," said the 27-year-old. "I only trained for my knees and jumped in competitions, that was the mission." His body doesn't like competitive sports that much, he has to struggle with tendon problems.

But the track and field athlete has fulfilled his European Championship mission. But the biggest mission is said to be the 2024 Olympics in Paris. "I would like to take the next Olympic Games with me. Last year it was bitter to watch from the couch," said Munich, who was celebrated like a rock star at the performance in the stadium in his hometown.

In Paris at the latest, he wants to defeat the Italian Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi, who crossed 2.30 meters in the Olympic Stadium on Thursday evening. What Potye already did in Berlin at the end of June together with the European champion Mateusz Przybylko, who was dethroned in Munich. "I jumped against Gianmarco a couple of times this year and thought it was time to beat him," said the local hero. "Now I have to postpone it again, but that will come."
