Hesse: arson in cell: man housed in psychiatry

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - Because he set his cell on fire and thus caused serious consequences for four employees, a 29-year-old man is being permanently housed in a psychiatric facility. That was decided by the district court in Frankfurt on Tuesday.

In June 2022, the prisoner set fire to a plastic box with clothing in the early morning. Four law enforcement officers who opened the cell due to the heavy smoke development had to go to the hospital with serious symptoms of poisoning. There was also property damage.

As for the motive, the 29-year-old explained that he wanted to kill himself after inner voices ordered him to do so. He wanted to "prevent the apocalypse". According to the expert's expertise, similar acts by the accused must be expected at any time - regardless of whether he is in custody or at large. Due to this danger to the general public, permanent accommodation in a psychiatric ward is urgently required, according to the court decision, which is already final.
