Hesse: bomb disposal: 20,000 residents leave their homes

Frankfurt (dpa/lhe) - After a World War II bomb was found in the Bockenheim district of Frankfurt, 20,000 residents evacuated their apartments on Wednesday morning. The police have been checking the evacuation area since 9:05 am. According to the police and fire brigade, the evacuation and control measures should be completed by 12 p.m.

Only then can the explosive ordnance clearance service of the state of Hesse inspect the detonator of the bomb, as a spokesman for the Frankfurt police said. It then depends on the condition of the detonator whether the bomb can be defused or whether it has to be detonated in a controlled manner.

The police have closed the streets around the evacuation area. There is also a nursing home, a section of the 648 motorway and the control room of the energy supplier Mainova in the exclusion zone. The autobahn is closed from Westkreuz towards the city centre. Local public transport has also been suspended for the duration of the measures in the affected area.
