"Even when the law on the energy price flat rate came into being, it was foreseeable that the implementation would be associated with difficulties," said the spokesman. The data required for an immediate payment - such as the bank details of the students - would not be available in full either from the federal states, the universities or the student unions.
Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger announced at the start of the information campaign "One-time payment200" that those affected can apply for the money from March 15th. The traffic light coalition had already decided on the relief last September.
Student representatives are skeptical. "The payment will hardly cushion the massive costs or make life easier," explained Carlotta Eklöh, head of the independent association of student bodies. Many students would already be living at the subsistence level.
A statement that the General Student Committee (Asta) of the University of Giessen confirms. The financial situation of many students has deteriorated, said an Asta spokesman. The support is useful, but too low. Some students would even consider dropping out due to their tight financial situation.
