Elon Musk seems to want to bury the hatchet. Lawyers for X, the social network it owns, told Brazil's Supreme Court that the platform will comply with all decisions issued by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), according to a letter seen by Reuters on Monday April 15.
The document addressed to Alexandre de Moraes, one of the eleven judges of the Supreme Court and who chairs the TSE, comes ten days after Elon Musk's violent statements against him. The latter contested a decision by the magistrate, who ordered the social network Upset, the boss of Space X and Tesla declared that he would cancel all the restrictions imposed by the magistrate and called on him to “resign or be dismissed”.
“As already communicated to the Federal Police, X Brazil informs that all orders issued by the Supreme Court and the TSE will continue to be fully respected by X Corp,” the lawyers told Alexandre de Moraes. A change of position on the part of the Brazilian unit of the company, which had assured the previous week that it was not able to control the desire of the American parent company to comply with Brazilian court orders.
Investigation into “digital militias”
In response to Elon Musk's attacks, Alexandre de Moraes said on Sunday April 7 that he would impose fines of 100,000 reais (around 18,150 euros) per day for each blocked account that X reactivates. The magistrate also opened an investigation into the billionaire for “criminal exploitation of X”.
Mr de Moraes is investigating “digital militias” that were accused of spreading fake news and hate messages during the government of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was declared ineligible in June 2023 by the TSE. The judge is also investigating an attempted coup by Bolsonaro after his electoral defeat in October 2022.
