Italy: Mother leaves toddler at home alone and goes to her boyfriend for a week - child dies

The case of a 37-year-old mother and her 18-month-old daughter has caused horror in Italy. According to the investigators, Alessia P. from Milan gave her child a sedative and then drove to her new boyfriend in the province of Bergamo, about 50 kilometers away. In total, she left her daughter alone for six days – with temperatures around 30 degrees. When she returned to the apartment, the child was dead.

According to prosecutors, the little girl had starved and died of thirst. As the Italian daily newspaper "Corriere della Serra" reports, the mother herself and a neighbor called the police after her return.

The investigation is ongoing, but investigators suspect there may have been sedatives in the child's milk. An almost empty pack of benzodiazepines was found in the apartment.

According to "Corriere della Serra", Alessia P. told the police that she had often left her child alone – although never for so long. From her statements, the picture of a disinterested and even cruel mother is drawn.

"I knew it could end up like this," she admitted to officers. Otherwise she showed no real remorse. Her daughter is said to have called her a "burden" during interrogation and said: "She was an obstacle to my freedom. I wanted to get my freedom back."

"This is a person who is unscrupulous and capable of committing any atrocity to satisfy his personal needs," prosecutors said. P. wanted to have romantic relationships with men "at all costs". She told her boyfriend, who is not the child's father, that a babysitter was taking care of the girl.

Alessia P. was arrested and is currently in custody. According to the investigators' findings so far, she should not suffer from mental problems. She is to be tried for intentional killing in connection with gross negligence. She could be sentenced to life imprisonment for this.
