The mayor of Kremlin-Bicêtre (Val-de-Marne) and president of the Republican and Citizen Movement (MRC), Jean-Luc Laurent, died following a “cardiac arrest that occurred suddenly on Wednesday evening, while his state of health seemed to have improved in recent days,” the town hall announced on Thursday January 11 in a press release. In December, he had already been hospitalized for a cardiovascular accident.
Aged 66, Jean-Luc Laurent was mayor of Kremlin-Bicêtre from 1995 to 2016. He returned to his mayor's chair in 2020. Former member of the PS, he participated in 1993 with Jean-Pierre Chevènement in the creation of the Citizens' Movement, now MRC, which he had chaired since 2010. Mr. Laurent was also a deputy for Val-de-Marne from 2012 to 2017.
“I can’t believe Jean-Luc Laurent is no more. It was only recently that we were discussing the future of the left together” wrote the number one of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, expressing his “saddened condolences”.
“The left and the communists are losing an important partner who for years and even in recent months has been committed to giving hope to our country,” reacted on X the national secretary of the French Communist Party, Fabien Roussel.
