After two years of corona restrictions, the city of Neubrandenburg wants to celebrate its 775th anniversary in 2023. Highlights are planned throughout the year - from sports and music to pilgrimages.
Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - The city of Neubrandenburg is celebrating its 775th anniversary in 2023 with a mixture of open-air concerts, sporting events, community festivals and a newly developed beer. "The start is the city's birthday on January 4, 2023," said Mayor Silvio Witt (independent) at the presentation of the festival program on Tuesday to journalists. "We have two difficult years behind us, so the anniversary should be celebrated for a year," said Witt. The 42-year-old Sarah Connor is expected to be the most prominent singer in June.
With around 64,000 inhabitants, Neubrandenburg is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania after Rostock and Schwerin. The city is regarded as the economic center between Berlin and the Baltic Sea, as a nationally known sports center and was founded in 1248. On January 4, 1248, the then Margrave of Brandenburg commissioned the knight Herbord von Raven to build the town on Lake Tollense, where there was already a monastery.
For the first time in 2023, among other things, there will be a Tollensesee swim, in which swimmers will cross the lake over a distance of around two kilometers. There is also a big bike race - the Mecklenburg Lake Circuit through the lake district - and the Tollensesee Run, which is around 42 kilometers long. On July 16th there will be a 775 meter long banquet in the culture park. There is also a pilgrimage day in May that leads to the churches of the city. The state's Mecklenburg-Western Pomeranian Day also takes place in Neubrandenburg and the German Association of Cities meets at Lake Tollense. There will be special welcome gifts for all newborns in 2023, said Witt. These new citizens should also be invited to the 800th anniversary celebrations.
A new beer was developed at the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences, which will be bottled for the first time as "Campus-Bräu" and will be offered for the anniversary. The city is architecturally known for the ring-shaped city center with the listed city wall, the four medieval gates and the concert church.
