Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: Meyer: Winter service in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania ready for use

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - According to Transport Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD), the winter service in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania cannot be misled by the mild autumn so far. "We are well prepared for the season, winter can come. The employees in the road maintenance departments on site are ready for action. The warehouses in the maintenance departments are filled with road salt," said Meyer on Friday after a visit to the Wismar road maintenance department in Rüggow (Northwest Mecklenburg) clear.

He assumes that the final preparations for the upcoming winter will be completed in all 25 road maintenance depots in the country in the coming week. The warehouses are already filled with 22,120 tons of grit and the entire storage capacity of 24,470 tons should be exhausted by the end of November. 128 kilometers of snow fences are in place to protect roads and bike paths from snowdrifts.

According to Meyer, the road construction administration is responsible for more than 1,900 kilometers of federal roads and about 3,300 kilometers of state roads. In addition, based on administrative agreements, they take over the winter service on 1250 kilometers of district roads. The more than 550 winter service employees spend an average of 80 days in winter to keep the roads passable even in snow and ice. But Meyer warned to drive with foresight, especially in the dark season. "Safety is very clear on every journey. The driving style has to be adapted to the weather conditions," he said.
