Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: After the compulsory Corona break, the Sweden festival is back in Wismar

Wismar (dpa / mv) - After a two-year Corona break, the Hanseatic city of Wismar is again inviting you to the traditional Sweden Festival. The folk festival, which the city estimates has drawn up to 50,000 visitors in the past, takes place from August 19th to 21st. As the organizers further announced on Wednesday in Wismar, there will be innovations in addition to the well-tried such as the historic parade, the Swedish race and the Kubb tournament. This included other event stages in the city center and an antique market. The old port with market stalls and fairground rides will also be increasingly included. The market square, where visitors can immerse themselves in the time when Wismar was occupied by the Swedes, is said to remain the central place for historical presentations.

With the Sweden Festival, the Hanseatic city has been commemorating the 155 years of belonging to Sweden (1648-1803) as a result of the Thirty Years' War for more than 20 years. For three days, guests are offered a colorful market, music and entertainment. In the past, the historic field camp and the depictions of battles with Swedish Caroline troops have always been particularly attractive. However, due to the war in Ukraine, the city of Wismar decided to suspend the historical combat depictions. This should also take into account refugees who are currently living in Wismar. Based on the history of the city of Wismar, around 20 small actors would re-enact historical scenes from the 17th century, it was said.
