Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Alliance around the CDU sends non-party applicants in the mayor's election

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - For the mayoral election in Schwerin in June next year, the CDU, FDP and the voters' association Independent Citizens have agreed on a common candidate. The three-way alliance wants to send the non-party theologian and Diakonie managing director Thomas Tweer into the race for the top of the city. "We are convinced that with Thomas Tweer we are making a convincing offer of personnel to the people of Schwerin," said a statement published on Friday.

The new election is scheduled for June 4, 2023. The 53-year-old Tweer is likely to face incumbent Rico Badenschier. The SPD politician surprisingly won the runoff against his predecessor Angelika Gramkow (left) in 2016 and is aiming for another term. However, the SPD has not yet officially announced this. Nine months before the mayor election in the state capital, no other applicants have been named.
