Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: District Administrator criticizes the planning of an LNG terminal in front of Rügen

Stralsund (dpa / mv) - The district administrator of the district of Western Pomerania-Rügen, Stefan Kerth (SPD), has criticized the plans for an LNG terminal off the island of Rügen. The planned terminal a few kilometers from Sellin will definitely have an impact on life and tourism on the island, Kerth said on Monday. "The current level of information is not sufficient."

A decision should be made about the development of a region in far too short a time, and the consequences for people and nature have not been considered in any way. "Therefore, the project can only be rejected at this stage," said Kerth.

Around 2,500 people demonstrated against the project in Baabe on the island of Rügen on Sunday. The prerequisite for every further step is a comprehensive, transparent examination as part of the approval process, the district administrator demanded.

An LNG terminal has already gone into operation in Lubmin on the Greifswalder Bodden. Kerth raised the question of whether the region had not already done enough to secure the energy supply.

Last week, 34 municipalities on the island of Rügen formulated their criticism of the plans to build the LNG import terminal off Sellin in a joint statement. "We call on the federal government to suspend the obviously hasty plans and to initiate a broad dialogue with all interest groups and experts," said the mayor's letter published last Thursday.
