Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Ex-national players Lahm and Šašić promote volunteering

Parchim (dpa/mv) - Soccer world champion Philipp Lahm and two-time European champion Célia Šašić have campaigned extensively for volunteer work. The two ex-professionals met with representatives from sports and politics as well as members from clubs in the region at the round table of the DFB and the Foundation for Commitment and Volunteering in Parchim on Friday. This should result in projects that strengthen voluntary work in the long term. Lahm also appeared at the "Solitaire" event center in Parchim in his capacity as tournament director for the 2024 European Football Championship.

The Euro should be an engine for volunteering - far beyond football, said ex-national team captain Lahm, who won the World Cup with the DFB selection in Brazil in 2014. Lahm and Šašić had previously shot at the goal wall with children and young people from SC Parchim.

"The EM is more than a sporting event. It should also become a motor for the common good and set new impulses for commitment and voluntary work in civil society," said Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Sports Minister Stefanie Drese and agreed with Lahm. "I fully support this idea," added the 45-year-old SPD politician. Volunteers in sports reported on their problems such as rising costs and a lack of sponsors when organizing popular sports.

The DFB already had the project to strengthen volunteer work
