Rostock (dpa/mv) - The frosty temperatures are currently causing ice to form on the coasts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) on Wednesday, ice is forming locally in flat, sheltered areas. In very sheltered areas there are already closed ice sheets. For the time being, however, the ice is not an issue for shipping, said a spokesman for the BSH branch in Rostock.
There is currently new ice in the fairways of the Wismar Bay and to Rostock, Stralsund and Wolgast. The Bodden waters are also affected. Freezing temperatures will continue to cause ice formation, especially in sheltered areas, into the weekend. On the outer coast, with sufficient water depth, the water temperature is still so high that no ice is likely to form there.
According to the BSH spokesman, higher temperatures and thus a stop to ice formation and possibly a decline are expected at the beginning of next week.
The Ministry of Economics in Schwerin has meanwhile announced that it will bear a proportionate share of the costs for additional bus trips on the island of Hiddensee in the event that the ice timetable comes into force there in winter. Then the ports of Kloster and Neuendorf would no longer be served by the ferry and additional connections would be offered to the port in Vitte, which is further served.
