Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: More cranes than a year ago in the northeast

Barth (dpa / mv) - According to information from the crane center in Groß Mohrdorf (Vorpommern-Rügen district), the spectacle of the crane autumn in the northeast is approaching its peak earlier than last year. The center announced on Tuesday that 48,000 "birds of happiness" had already been counted last weekend. This is over 10,000 more birds than at the same time last year.

The Western Pomeranian Baltic coast is one of the largest resting areas for cranes in Europe. Around October 15, up to 70,000 cranes are expected at the same time, which will use up their energy reserves for the onward flight.

According to the information, the large birds can also be found in the interior of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, for example in the Müritz region. A total of around 175,000 cranes probably migrate through Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania during one season. They come from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe and mainly move to Spain, but increasingly also to France. More than 250,000 animals stayed in Spain last winter and more than 150,000 in France. A few thousand cranes have now also remained in Germany.
