Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Resident parking: Schwerin will quadruple the prices from 2024

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - In the state capital of Schwerin, the prices for the resident parking permit are expected to rise significantly from 2024. Parking for citizens should cost 120 euros instead of the previous 30.70 euros annually, as the city administration confirmed on Tuesday. The city does not exhaust the permissible framework of 360 euros. The NDR had previously reported.

In September, the state passed an ordinance that paved the way for higher fees for resident parking. This was made possible by a change in the law at federal level. Previously, fees for resident parking permits were capped at 30.70 euros.

There are no plans to compensate for the increase in costs for low earners who depend on their car. "Equal treatment of all residents who accept the offer of a resident parking permit is planned," it said.

The fee increase was passed in the city parliament on Monday together with the double budget for the next two years. The city wants to generate a surplus of three million euros per year in order to reduce old debts. This is a prerequisite for an additional nine million euros in debt relief from the state.

"The debt relief strategy that we are implementing with the 2029 budget security concept together with the city council is largely reflected in the budget figures that have now been decided," said Mayor Rico Badenschier (SPD). However, there are also risks that could make a supplementary budget necessary: The city includes the energy crisis, the rise in interest rates, the development of tax revenue and increasing spending on social security.
