Schwerin/Upahl (dpa/mv) - The municipality of Upahl (Nordwestmecklenburg district) is taking legal action against the planned construction of container accommodation for 400 refugees in the area. As a spokesman for the administrative court in Schwerin said, an urgent application against the district was received there on Thursday afternoon. The aim of this application is to immediately stop the work that has already started. The radio station Ostseewelle was the first to report about it.
According to the court spokesman, the district will be informed of the content of the letter on Friday and will then have the opportunity to present its position. The competent chamber then has to decide whether to grant the application after weighing the arguments presented. There is no negotiation on this. It was not announced when a decision could be expected.
Violent protests against the construction of the refugee accommodation have been raging in the region for weeks. According to the critics, the container village is far too big for a village like Upahl, which is home to around 500 people and lacks the necessary infrastructure. In addition, there are repeated complaints that the villagers were not involved in the decision-making process and were therefore presented with a fait accompli.
Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) called on Deutschlandfunk on Thursday to reduce the planned accommodation. However, the responsible district administrator Tino Schomann (CDU) defended the plans. He explained that the accommodation of up to 400 refugees in Upahl was due to the need.
