North Rhine-Westphalia: activists disturb the show in the dolphinarium in Duisburg

Duisburg (dpa / lnw) - Six activists disrupted a performance in the dolphinarium at Duisburg Zoo on Sunday. They managed to jump into the main pool, police said. They would have carried waterproof banners and wore wetsuits. The spectators leaving the dolphinarium were filmed by members of the group. The Dutch activists are now expecting criminal charges.

Animal rights activists repeatedly criticize dolphinariums as not species-appropriate. The Animal Welfare Association says, for example: "Dolphins have a very great need for exercise and place very high demands on water quality and space requirements. The pools, which are tiny compared to their natural habitat, offer the animals little retreat and freedom of movement."
