North Rhine-Westphalia: Council member is said to have faked alleged threats

Erkelenz (dpa / lnw) - A local politician from the city of Erkelenz, who reported alleged threats by right-wing extremists, is said to have only faked these acts. This was the result of the investigation, as the public prosecutor's office in Mönchengladbach and the Aachen police announced on Friday. It can be assumed that the reported crimes did not occur, that they were faked and that there was no threat. The council member also admitted this in an interrogation, said a police spokeswoman. Now the Green politician is being investigated for faking a crime.

In July he had reported several alleged crimes and threats against his person. According to media reports, he stated, among other things, that he had had a note with a death threat in his mailbox, which had been signed "NSU 2.0". State security took up the investigation and the police initiated protective measures for him. But in reality, the Green politician is said to have written the letters himself.

As part of the investigation, doubts arose about the representations of the council member, said the police spokeswoman. During a search, evidence was found that corroborated this suspicion.
