Weilerswist (dpa / lnw) - In Weilerswist (Euskirchen district), a man was hit by a freight train and fatally injured. The man wanted to cross the level crossing on Blankenheimer Straße in the Derkum district early Tuesday morning with the barriers closed and probably overlooked an incoming freight train, said a police spokesman in Euskirchen. "We're assuming there was an accident." Witnesses stated that the 38-year-old tried to reach the other side at the last moment, the spokesman continued. The police have started the investigation.
According to DB Regio, there were temporary delays and partial cancellations on the rail route between Euskirchen and Cologne until around 9 a.m. due to the blocking of the route section.
