North Rhine-Westphalia: Police caught burglars sleeping in the stolen car

Bielefeld (dpa / lnw) - After a burglary and a spree of thieves in a garden center in Bielefeld, a 19-year-old known to the police was apparently so exhausted that he went to sleep in the stolen getaway car. Patrol officers discovered the alleged burglar there on Tuesday morning, the police said.

The night before, the young man from Bielefeld is said to have smashed the windows of a garden center and searched several rooms and cupboards in the building. He found cash and a car key. He stole the company's pickup truck and fled with his loot.

Police officers discovered the striking yellow getaway vehicle in a Bielefeld parking lot early Tuesday morning. The rear windows were sealed with blue foil. The license plates were also stolen, it was said. They belonged to an RV and had already been reported stolen. When officers knocked on the car window, the stunned suspect opened the door. He had gone to sleep inside. The police initiated criminal proceedings.
