North Rhine-Westphalia: power plant blockade - verdict against climate activist expected

Grevenbroich (dpa / lnw) - In the criminal proceedings surrounding the track blockade at the Neurath lignite power plant, the verdict is expected today from 11.15 a.m. at the Grevenbroich district court. In the process, a 24-year-old diverse person from Oldenburg has to answer. You are accused of disrupting public services and resisting law enforcement officials. According to the indictment, two activists had chained themselves to the rails.

At the start 14 days ago, the accused did not confess to the blockade, but justified it with the necessary saving of the global climate. The evidence seems clear: the press and police extensively documented the action on November 5, 2021.

In addition to the punishment in the current proceedings, the activists are threatened with a claim for damages. According to an employee, RWE is preparing a civil lawsuit in the amount of 1.4 million euros. On the first day of the trial two weeks ago, activists had disrupted the trial several times. The planned trial against a 36-year-old activist from Kiel was postponed.

From the activists' point of view, the action was a success: Because RWE had to shut down the power plant, 8,000 tons less carbon dioxide were emitted. The RWE employee contradicted this: Because of the action, power plants had been ramped up elsewhere and emissions were generated there.
