Dusseldorf (dpa/lnw) - Unusual speed limits are causing a stir in Dusseldorf: After the state capital turns off thousands of gas lanterns at night, new 30 km/h signs were put up in these places for traffic safety. The ADAC is partially critical of the procedure.
According to a city spokeswoman, 8,000 of the 14,000 gas lanterns have been switched off since mid-October, mostly between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. This is supposed to save energy. A few days ago, the city installed 157 new 30 km/h signs on the 23 sections of road affected. The speed limit only applies during the night hours when the lanterns are off. The "Rheinische Post" had reported about it.
According to the district government, there have been no complaints about the new speed limits with the supervisory authority. The city was asked for a report. According to a spokeswoman, it is not yet possible to assess whether the measure will actually serve to improve traffic safety.
The ADAC is partially critical of the measure. Of course you understand the background of energy saving, so a spokesman. But the procedure makes little sense, especially on main roads with a clear separation between the roadway, cycle path and sidewalk. A blanket 30 km/h zone is the wrong approach here.
