North Rhine-Westphalia: Two young men save 72-year-olds in an apartment fire

Schwalmtal (dpa / lnw) - Two young men rescued a 72-year-old man in Schwalmtal (Lower Rhine) from a burning apartment and possibly saved his life. The 19 and 25-year-old men noticed on Saturday evening from the first-floor balcony that there was a fire on the ground floor of the apartment building. The neighbors bravely opened the apartment door and found the senior citizen sitting motionless on a sofa. The carpet in front of the sofa was on fire and the flames had already reached the 72-year-old's trouser leg.

As the police announced on Monday, the two had acted in an exemplary manner and, with their quick intervention, possibly prevented worse things from happening. They rescued the 72-year-old from the apartment and made an emergency call. The fire brigade put out the fire and the pensioner was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The police have taken over the investigation into the exact cause of the fire, it said.
