S-Bahn traffic over the Elbe will remain disrupted for a long time

Commuters from the south of Hamburg will have to be patient in the coming days. After an accident under a railway bridge between Hammerbrook and Wilhelmsburg, the S3 and S31 line, which is already heavily used, can only be used as a single track for at least a week.

On Monday morning around 6 a.m., a truck driver brought his vehicle that had caught fire under the railway bridge at the "Elbbrücken" station to a standstill. Traffic on the S-Bahn, long-distance trains and the U4 was completely interrupted for hours while the fire was being extinguished, the accident was being recorded and the first damage analyzes were being carried out on the bridge.

It took 40 firefighters more than an hour to put out the burning truck. Long-distance traffic and the U4 could run again later on Monday, the Elbe crossing of the S3 and the S31 remained completely closed until the end of the day.

S-Bahn traffic was resumed early Tuesday morning. But only very limited. Only one of two tracks is available for the two lines to and from Harburg.

The extensive damage analyzes on the bridge continued, said a railway spokeswoman on Tuesday. The second track could remain closed until early next week. Only then is a statement from the experts expected.

A shuttle service was initiated between the Hammerbrook and Wilhelmsburg stations. An S-Bahn runs back and forth here on the shared track. Buses also run between Wilhelmsburg and the Elbbrücken station, where passengers can change to the U4 underground line.
