Saxony: 3.1 million euros for the Zwickau tram line

Zwickau (dpa/sn) - The state government is funding the renewal of a particularly popular Zwickau tram line with 3.1 million euros. A functioning local transport with adequate infrastructure is also indispensable for the medium-sized centers, said Ines Fröhlich, State Secretary for Mobility, according to the announcement on Sunday. Saxony is investing in these systems to promote the success of the traffic turnaround and the achievement of climate goals.

The route, opened in 1992, is important for local traffic in the fourth largest city in Saxony. It connects the Zwickau residential areas of Eckersbach and Neuplanitz with the city center and the West Saxon University, among other things. According to the transport company, the line has up to 3.4 million passengers a year.

In the coming year, ballast, sleepers, tracks and the traction power systems, drainage and overhead lines are to be renewed. In addition, some stops will be made barrier-free.
