Saxony: Almost 2000 apprenticeship positions on the training market are vacant

More supply than demand: never before has the difference between available training places and applicants in Saxony been as large as this year. The experts see several reasons for this.

Dresden (dpa/sn) - In Saxony, almost 2,000 apprenticeship positions will remain vacant this year. Around 2,721 apprenticeships faced 762 young people who were still looking in October, said Klaus-Peter Hansen, head of the employment agency in Saxony, on Thursday in Dresden. The difference between supply and demand is a record. Hansen gave one of the reasons why more and more young people would opt for school training or dual studies. Sometimes the place of residence of the applicant and the place of training do not match. Sometimes supply and demand do not match for certain professions, sometimes the applicant's qualifications are not sufficient.

"We remain optimistic and assume that the economy knows how important it is to recruit young people," said Hansen. With the beginning of the corona pandemic, the career choice process took place under difficult conditions. "It's kind of a long covid for youngsters." Companies should no longer be allowed to offer internships, which is why many young people could not find their way around. In the last training year from October 2021 to September 2022, around 19,200 young people looked for an apprenticeship with the help of careers advice. In the same period, 21,900 training places were reported to the employment agency.

The need for skilled workers now affects all sectors, said Andreas Sperl, President of the IHK Dresden and spokesman for the Saxon IHK. "Many industries are signaling to us that they would like to hire significantly more trainees in the future - or rather, have to - as more and more employees are about to leave the workforce Metal technology, commercial professions, hotels and restaurants as well as electrical engineering.

In the trades, most training contracts were concluded in the professions of motor vehicle mechatronics technician, electronics technician, plant mechanic for sanitary, heating and air conditioning, carpenter and painter and varnisher. According to Frank Wagner, President of the Chemnitz Chamber of Crafts and head of the Saxon Chamber of Crafts Association, there is an almost 100% guarantee that trainees will be taken on by the companies. The Dresden chip manufacturer Globalfoundries, where the statistics on training were presented on Thursday, guarantees the takeover as soon as the apprenticeship contracts are signed. The company intends to continue its internship program in the near future.

Chamber of Commerce President Wagner regretted that young people are sometimes propagated a wrong image of life. He described it with the formula "earn a lot, work little, take no responsibility".
