Saxony-Anhalt: Around 200 additional teachers for Ukrainian students

The six-week school vacation is almost over. Classes start on Thursday. Schooling is now also compulsory for Ukrainian schoolchildren. How many will actually be there is still unclear.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - So far, a good 200 additional teachers for Ukrainian students have been hired in Saxony-Anhalt. A spokesman for the Ministry of Education in Magdeburg said that 167 Ukrainian teachers had signed contracts. That is around 30 more than before the summer holidays. The number will continue to grow as further expressions of interest have been received. In addition to these teachers who give lessons in Ukrainian, the country is also looking for specialists in German as a target language to teach German to the children. So far there have been 43 settings in this area. 150 of these positions could be filled.

It is unclear how many Ukrainian schoolchildren actually arrive at the schools on Thursday, the first day of school after the holidays. Only then should the data be collected.

The city of Halle, as the school authority, announced that the state school authority would count the number of Ukrainian students there for the first time on Thursday. The city will receive an overview on August 29 at the earliest. It will also be known at the earliest how many arrival classes there will be. According to the latest statistics from July 7th, 618 pupils from the Ukraine attended schools from different providers in Halle at the end of the past school year.

As of August 21, about 6,700 school-age children in Ukraine were registered in the counties and self-governing cities, according to the Interior Ministry. They are among around 26,900 war refugees from Ukraine who have been reported to date. Before the holidays, a good 2,500 students from the country had been admitted to the schools.

According to the Ministry of Education, compulsory schooling and the country's curriculum apply to Ukrainian children and young people.
