Bitterfeld-Wolfen (dpa/sa) - The pharmaceutical company Bayer wants to produce even more over-the-counter medicines at its East German location Bitterfeld-Wolfen in the future. A new production facility is being built for this with investments "in the double-digit million range," explained Frank Wilgmann, Managing Director of Bayer Bitterfeld GmbH, on Tuesday at the topping-out ceremony for the new building. The new facility is scheduled to start up in September 2023. This not only creates space for new technology. "We will also be able to expand the range," says Wilgmann. Bayer's pharmaceutical subsidiary has been producing over-the-counter medicines in Bitterfeld since 1995.
According to the information, more than 150 billion tablets have been manufactured at the site since then. The portfolio in Bitterfeld now also includes prescription drugs. According to the information, around 890 million euros have been invested since the East German location went into operation. Bayer Bitterfeld is one of the largest employers and trainers in the chemical region. Around 480 people currently work at Bayer Bitterfeld, and 720 young people have been trained since the tablet plant started operations.
The company was considered a key investment in the restructuring of the chemical-pharmaceutical industry in East Germany. The newly built Bitterfeld tablet factory, where the painkiller Aspirin is manufactured, is located on the grounds of the Bitterfeld-Wolfen chemical park. After 1990, around 300 companies have settled on an area of around 1200 hectares of renovated industrial site, which, according to the operating company, employs around 12,000 people.
