Saxony-Anhalt: Clinic in Halle puts new surgical robots into operation

Halle (dpa/sa) - Patients with injuries to the head and spine should in future benefit from the use of a surgical robot during operations at the Bergmannstrost Clinic in Halle. The robot has a 3D navigation and imaging system, the hospital said on Wednesday. The system offers an unprecedented level of precision in surgical interventions, explained trauma surgeon Bernhard Ullrich. "We are thus creating more safety for our patients and new possibilities, especially in spinal and head surgery."

The clinic has invested more than two million euros in this. It is now possible to create high-resolution 3D image data of even the smallest anatomical details at any time during the intervention. Even before an operation begins, the doctors can use a 3D simulation to plan an operation in detail and run through various operation scenarios. In addition, a navigation-guided robotic arm assists in the positioning of screw connections and implants.

According to its own statements, the Bergmannstrost is currently one of five locations nationwide that have such equipment at this stage of expansion. More than 1,000 spinal operations are performed on site every year.
