Saxony-Anhalt: Forest fire prevention measures in the Harz Mountains are presented

Wernigerode (dpa/sa) - After several forest fires in the Harz Mountains this summer, future preventive measures are now to be presented. Forest Minister Sven Schulze (CDU), the head of the Harz National Park, Roland Pietsch, the district administrator of the Harz district, Thomas Balcerowski (CDU), and Wernigerode's mayor Tobias Kascha (SPD) want to comment on this on Friday (08.30 a.m.) in Wernigerode . The Ministry of Forestry said in advance that they had agreed on concentrated prevention work, including dealing with dead wood in the national park.

Large parts of the spruce stands have died and are regarded as a danger in the event of a fire. In the national park, however, interventions in nature are only possible under certain conditions.

Recently, two major fires had kept emergency services busy for days: On August 11, a fire broke out near Schierke, and the affected area was subsequently given as 3.6 hectares. After another fire broke out on September 3rd on the Brocken, the emergency services needed about a week to put out the fire. Several firefighting helicopters and firefighting planes from Italy helped. There have recently been differing statements about the extent of the affected area. While the Harz National Park had a maximum of 12 hectares, the Harz district saw 330 hectares affected by the fire.
