Saxony-Anhalt: Hydrogen pipeline network also through Saxony-Anhalt

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - With the start of construction of the announced hydrogen network in Germany, new supply points will also be created in Saxony-Anhalt. "The construction of a hydrogen storage facility in Bad Lauchstädt and a pipeline between Bad Lauchstädt, Leuna and Salzgitter in Lower Saxony is of particular importance for Saxony-Anhalt," said a spokesman for the Ministry of Energy on Thursday. For this purpose, the federal and state governments want to invest a total of almost 150 million euros.

The three transmission system operators Gascade, Ontras and Terranets BW want to build a pipeline system for hydrogen from the Baltic Sea to southwest Germany. In a first step, pipelines are to be converted by 2025 so that the gas can be transported from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to Thuringia. Conversions in Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate are planned by 2028, so that from 2030 hydrogen can be transported to Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

According to the Saxon government, Ontras will start building the hydrogen pipeline network this week. The Federal Ministry of Economics has given the go-ahead for the early start of two projects. In total, Ontras plans to build around 900 kilometers of hydrogen pipelines in eastern Germany.
