Halle (dpa/sa) - Saxony-Anhalt would like to continue funding the model project "midwives' delivery room" at the University Hospital Halle until mid-2024. Responsibility in the delivery room lies in the hands of the midwives, medical staff are only available in emergencies. As the university hospital announced on Friday, a corresponding grant from the state in the amount of 289,600 euros has now been handed over. The university hospital expects the model to require fewer interventions and caesarean sections.
“Approximately every third birth in the country is a caesarean birth. That is clearly too much, since a large part is not medically necessary,” emphasized Health Minister Petra Grimm-Benne (SPD). A cesarean section should remain an emergency solution and not a desired cesarean section as the main solution. "We hope that with delivery rooms run by midwives, more children will be born naturally again."
"We are pleased that, with the support of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, we can continue to offer families this additional service for spontaneous births in a safe atmosphere - shielded from everyday hospital life and yet secured in an emergency by the full range of services of a university maximum care provider," explained Christiane Becker, Director of Nursing at the University Medicine Halle. This not only increases the quality of individual care for women during childbirth, it also improves the working conditions for midwives.
