"We deal with materials research and try to bring intelligent materials into new applications," said Holger Kunze from the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology of the German Press Agency. Many of these materials have their origins in space travel. The researchers tried to use these materials for civil applications. "Toys are a great field there."
The researchers made initial contact with artisans and wooden toy makers last year at the "Erzgebirge Memorial" in Seiffen. In cooperation with the nutcracker workshop Füchtner, the first product should be available by Christmas. The researchers and Füchtner's team are still silent about the details. Otherwise patents would be endangered, it said.
