Chemnitz (dpa/sn) - The city of Chemnitz wants to take action against disposable waste with the "Chemnitz Cup", its own reusable cup system. The city announced that the issue of 5,600 cups to interested companies and restaurateurs began on Monday. The blue drinking vessels made from recycled plastic hold 0.3 liters and cost a deposit of one euro. They were bought from the Chemnitz provider Relocal. With the "Chemnitz Cup", a decision by the city council to develop a reusable cup system for the city is being implemented. Other dealers could join.
There are also reusable cup offers in other Saxon cities. A deposit system for coffee cups was set up in Leipzig in 2018 via the "Recycling2go" project. The cups come from the Munich company Recup, which claims to have dozens of distribution points in Dresden.
In Germany, a multiple-use obligation will come into force at the beginning of next year. Companies of a certain size are then obliged to offer reusable packaging. According to the city of Chemnitz, around 320,000 disposable cups are filled with hot drinks every day in Germany - 140,000 of them as to-go cups.
