Dresden (dpa/sn) - The officially reported number of corona infections has increased significantly in Saxony. Within a week, the seven-day incidence increased from 390.9 to 687.1 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the overview of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Thursday. Despite the increase, Saxony is below the national average (793.8). For Saarland, Bavaria and Hesse, the RKI reported incidence values above the 1000 mark. In a regional comparison, the infection rate in the Free State was most recently highest in the Vogtland (821.7) and lowest in the district of Meissen (605.0).
Experts have been assuming for some time that the value does not fully reflect the infection situation because not all infected people have a PCR test done and only those are counted in the statistics.
According to the RKI, almost 1.82 million infections have been reported in Saxony since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 - with just over four million inhabitants. 16,078 people have died from or with a Sars-CoV-2 infection.
