Dresden (dpa/sn) - Several hundred people protested in Dresden on Saturday as part of a nationwide campaign for a social, fair and ecological policy. There is great concern for the people who can no longer pay the horrendously rising prices for food and energy, said Sylvia Bühler, member of the Verdi national board, at the rally.
Bühler clearly rejected the idea of appropriating the protests of right-wing extremists. "We are deeply convinced that hatred and hate speech endanger our peaceful coexistence."
Several trade unions as well as social and environmental protection organizations had called for the rally under the motto "Solidarity through the crisis". In addition to Dresden, there were also protests in Berlin, Hanover, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt.
Sebastian Wegner, Federal Manager of the People's Solidarity, called for a "protective shield for services of general interest in order to also protect social institutions".
