Saxony: Internals given rights? Police investigation

Zwickau (dpa/sn) - The suspicion that a Zwickau police officer passed on internal information to the right-wing extremist scene continues to occupy the judiciary. Originally, the public prosecutor's office in Zwickau had stopped the investigation last year. But the public prosecutor's office in Dresden had legally assessed the case differently and instructed the authority to resume the process, said spokeswoman Ines Leonhardt on Tuesday in Zwickau. The "Freie Presse" had previously reported on it. The investigation is still ongoing, it said.

In this specific case, it is about a former head of the Zwickau police station. He is suspected of having forwarded an internal email to the lawyer and chairman of the far-right Free Saxony party, Martin Kohlmann. It was about demonstrations on May 14, 2022 on the main market. Disciplinary proceedings were initiated against him after the allegations became known - he was also transferred to another post.

The case is reminiscent of the procedure in connection with controversial election posters of the right-wing extremist splinter party III. Way to the federal election in 2021. At that time, too, the Zwickau public prosecutors only became active after the intervention of the public prosecutor's office. The authority had previously rejected investigations.
