Dresden (dpa/sn) - The Dresden State Art Collections (SKD) are showing Anton Graff's "Portrait of a Gentleman" from Tuesday. However, art lovers must be determined, because the oil painting can only be seen until this Sunday before it comes to the restoration workshop for examination, the SKD announced on Monday.
They had acquired this work by the Electoral Saxon court painter Anton Graff (1736-1813) last autumn. According to the SKD, it is unclear who the portrayed person is. With around 50 works by Graff, the Dresden Picture Gallery owns one of the artist's largest collections in a museum. The "Portrait of a Gentleman" comes from Graff's early creative period.
Anton Graff came from Winterthur in Switzerland. He is considered one of the most important portrait painters of the Enlightenment. From 1766 he was court painter in Dresden, from 1789 professor for portraits at the Dresden Art Academy.
